Launching a Shopify App

App store listing, review velocity, and the merchant-acquisition tactics that work outside the marketplace algorithm.

A marketplace is a search engine with reviews attached

App marketplaces behave less like app stores and more like vertical search engines where reviews are the dominant ranking factor. Merchants arrive with a problem, type it in, and choose from the first handful of results — nearly always weighing star ratings and review counts before anything else.

This has a specific consequence for launching. Your listing is not a formality after the build; it is where essentially every install decision is made. It deserves the same attention as a landing page, because that is exactly what it is.

Solve a problem merchants already name

Marketplace discovery is search-driven, which means merchants have to be looking for something before they can find you. An app addressing a problem merchants actively search for gets found by the marketplace's own traffic. An app addressing a problem they have not yet articulated has to generate every bit of its own demand — a much harder and slower business, and one founders frequently choose without noticing.

Reviews are the flywheel and timing is everything

Reviews drive ranking, ranking drives installs, installs produce more reviews. Getting into that loop early is the whole game, and the lever you control is when you ask.

Asking on a schedule produces poor results because it catches merchants at arbitrary moments. Asking at the instant the app first demonstrably works — the first successful sync, the first recovered cart, the first automated task completing — catches them at the point of maximum goodwill. The difference in response rate is substantial.

Uninstalls hurt twice

A merchant who installs and abandons setup costs you the revenue and damages your marketplace standing. This makes onboarding friction unusually expensive compared to ordinary software, where a stalled trial is merely a lost customer.

Every configuration step you can infer, default, or defer improves activation and ranking simultaneously. One-step installation is worth engineering effort that would be hard to justify in another context.

Support is a growth channel here

In most businesses, support quality is invisible to prospective customers. In an app marketplace it is published, in public, as the reviews that determine your ranking. That inverts the usual calculation: fast and competent support is not an operating cost to minimise but an acquisition channel with a measurable return.

Do not let the algorithm be your only source

Apps that depend entirely on marketplace search are one ranking change away from a bad quarter. Agency relationships, merchant-facing content, and third-party listings give you install sources that survive algorithm changes you cannot influence.

The playbook

  1. Treat the listing as a landing page

Your app store listing is where nearly every install decision is made, and it is subject to the same rules as any landing page: a specific headline, screenshots that show the outcome, and copy addressing the merchant's problem rather than your feature set.

  2. Choose a problem merchants already search for

Marketplace discovery is search-driven. An app solving a problem merchants actively look for gets found; an app solving a problem they have not yet named requires you to generate all your own demand, which is a much harder business.

  3. Engineer review velocity from day one

Reviews determine ranking and conversion in every app marketplace. Ask at the moment the app first delivers value — after the first successful sync or the first recovered cart — not on a schedule, and never before the merchant has seen it work.

  4. Make installation genuinely one step

Merchants abandon setup wizards quickly, and an uninstall shortly after install is doubly damaging because it hurts ranking as well as revenue. Every configuration step you can infer or defer improves both activation and your marketplace position.

  5. Support like it is marketing, because it is

In app marketplaces, support quality is visible: it shows up in reviews, which drive ranking, which drives installs. Fast, competent support is a growth channel with a measurable return, not an operating cost to minimise.

  6. Build demand outside the marketplace

Relying solely on marketplace search leaves you exposed to algorithm changes you cannot influence. Agency partnerships, content aimed at merchants, and third-party listings give you install sources that survive a ranking change.
