Campaign Attribution: Why Every Startup Needs UTM Tracking

Understanding where your traffic comes from is fundamental to making smart marketing decisions. Without UTM tracking, your analytics tool shows generic traffic sources — "social" or "referral" — with no way to distinguish between your Twitter launch announcement, your LinkedIn thought leadership post, and your Reddit comment linking to your product. UTM parameters solve this by tagging each link with metadata that your analytics platform can parse and report on.

The Five UTM Parameters Explained

utm_source identifies where the traffic originates. Examples: twitter, linkedin, newsletter, producthunt, prolaunch. This is the most important parameter and should be set on every tracked link.

utm_medium describes the marketing channel or medium. Examples: social, email, cpc (cost-per-click), referral, display. Combined with source, this lets you compare channel effectiveness — is social media driving more conversions than email?

utm_campaign names the specific marketing campaign. Examples: summer-launch, black-friday-2025, beta-invite, weekly-digest. This groups all links from a single campaign across different sources and mediums, so you can measure total campaign performance.

utm_term is used primarily for paid search campaigns to track which keyword triggered your ad. For organic campaigns, you can repurpose it to track specific topics or categories.

utm_content differentiates between multiple links pointing to the same URL within the same campaign. Use it for A/B testing — label two different call-to-action buttons as utm_content=header-cta and utm_content=footer-cta to see which drives more clicks.

UTM Best Practices for Startups

Be consistent with naming conventions. "Twitter" and "twitter" are treated as different sources in Google Analytics. Establish a naming guide before your first campaign and stick with lowercase, hyphenated values.

Don't use UTM parameters on internal links. Adding UTM tags to links within your own site resets the traffic source — if a visitor from Google clicks an internal UTM-tagged link, their source changes from "google/organic" to your UTM values, breaking your attribution data.

Keep a UTM tracking spreadsheet. Document every tagged link with its source, medium, campaign, destination URL, and the date it was created. This prevents duplicate or conflicting parameter naming and makes it easy to audit your campaigns.

Integration with Pro Launch

Pro Launch already uses utm_source tracking for sponsor links and outbound click attribution. When you create campaign links for your launch promotion, consistent UTM tagging lets you measure exactly how much traffic each promotional channel drives to your launch page — and which channels convert into upvotes, comments, and user signups. Use this builder to create properly formatted links that align with your existing analytics setup.
